What are React Hooks?

React hooks are functions that let you use React features such as state and lifecycle methods without writing a class. They allow you to reuse stateful logic across components, making your code more modular and easier to read.

There are two types of React hooks:

  1. State hooks: These hooks let you add state to your functional components. The most commonly used state hook is useState, which returns a state variable and a function to update that state variable.
  2. Effect hooks: These hooks let you perform side effects in your functional components. The most commonly used effect hook is useEffect, which allows you to perform side effects like fetching data, setting timers, and subscribing to events.

How to use React Hooks

To use React hooks in your application, you first need to install React 16.8 or later. Once you have that installed, you can start using hooks in your functional components.

Using the useState Hook

Here’s an example of how to use the useState hook to add state to a functional component:

In this example, we’re using the useState hook to add a state variable called count to our component. We're also using the setCount function to update the count variable every time the user clicks the button.

Using the useEffect Hook

Here’s an example of how to use the useEffect hook to perform a side effect in a functional component:

import React, { useState, useEffect } from 'react';
function User() {
  const [user, setUser] = useState(null);
  useEffect(() => {
    fetch('/api/user')
      .then(response => response.json())
      .then(data => setUser(data));
  }, []);
  return (
    <div>
      {user ? (

      ) : (

      )}
    </div>
  );
}

In this example, we’re using the useEffect hook to fetch data from an API and update the user state variable when the component mounts. We're also using the empty array [] as the second argument to useEffect, which tells React to only run the effect once when the component mounts.
